Establish the connection

Backoffice connections for Advantage

Understand when a store computer needs a direct connection to a supported Verifone Commander or Gilbarco Passport POS.

Purpose

This section explains how to verify and prepare the network connection that lets a store’s Windows computer reach its point-of-sale system. It covers Verifone sites served by a Commander controller and Gilbarco Passport sites.

The connection process has four parts:

  1. Confirm whether the Windows computer can already reach the POS.
  2. Gather any cables or adapters the approved connection requires.
  3. Identify the store’s managed network service provider (MNSP) equipment.
  4. Work with the store’s network provider to connect the computer through the correct backoffice port.

These steps establish a network path. They do not install Advantage, change the POS, or enable register writes.

Before you begin

Gas-station networks protect payment, fuel, and POS equipment. Their layouts differ by store, network provider, and equipment model.

Do not unplug an existing cable, move a device, reset network equipment, or choose a port by trial and error. If the store’s approved backoffice port is not already known, photograph the equipment and cable labels and contact the MNSP before making a change.

Do you need to follow this section?

Start by checking the connection from the Windows computer that will run the Advantage Agent.

  • If the standard POS endpoint opens, the backoffice network path is already present. Continue with POS configuration and Advantage installation.
  • If it does not open, stop at the failed check and prepare the physical connection with the store’s MNSP.

Using another backoffice product does not prove that this computer has the connection Advantage needs. Some products run on a different computer or connect to the network in a different way. Always perform the exact POS check before deciding to skip setup.

Supported POS scope

For Verifone, Advantage currently supports stores whose registers are served by a Commander controller. Register names such as Ruby, Ruby2, Topaz, C18, or RubyCi do not by themselves identify the controller. A legacy Sapphire controller is not supported by the current Advantage Agent.

For Gilbarco, this section applies to Passport sites with an approved XMLGateway connection.
